When we talk about Lilith in astrology, we’re talking about a part of the chart that can feel wild, raw, unfiltered, and incredibly liberating. She’s not here to make us feel comfortable or fit into what society expects. She’s here to show us where we can reclaim our power, confront our shadows, and rise into unapologetic wholeness. In this post, we'll delve into the significance of each Lilith point - Black Moon Lilith (True and Mean), Dark Moon Lilith, and Asteroid Lilith - and provide tips on how to understand and learn from them in your own natal chart.

**I now also offer a Lilithian reading, where I dive into your Black Moon Lilith (the most prominent of these placements) and give you insight on possible shadow wounds with guidance on how to heal them in order to help empower yourself. This reading also includes a tarot reading with Lilith.**

The Many Faces of Lilith in Astrology

Before diving into interpretation, it’s important to understand that there isn’t just one Lilith in astrology. There are actually several points that bear her name, and each can represent aspects of her myth and energy. Let’s go over what each one of these is.

Black Moon Lilith (mean or true):

This is the most well-known Lilith point and is not a physical object but a mathematical point. This point is determined by the lunar apogee (the furthest point in the Moon's orbit from Earth). To try and put it simply, the moon’s orbit around the Earth is elliptical, not circular. This means that the Earth is not the only focal point in the moon’s orbit. It is hypothesized that there is another focal point that is causing the moon to orbit in this way. That other point is an invisible one. This is the Black Moon Lilith and there are two ways that astrologers calculate this point in your birth chart—the mean and true Lilith.

Mean Lilith is a time-averaged point, smoother and more general; its an estimated point. True Lilith fluctuates more, meaning it takes into account retrogrades, and can feel more raw or intense but it may be harder to pinpoint in a birth chart. Many astrologers (myself included) work with Mean Lilith for a clearer interpretation, while others prefer the immediacy of True Lilith. Both are valid. Use whichever resonates most. Both refer to the same energy of the Black Moon Lilith. They usually also tend to be very close in proximity and will most likely fall under the same sign and house, but not always.

Either way, Black Moon Lilith represents the parts of ourselves that we may keep hidden from others, perhaps due to fear of judgment or rejection. It can symbolize a desire for autonomy, independence, and a rejection of societal norms and expectations. It points to our darker impulses, primal desires, and areas of emotional intensity that we may not readily acknowledge; it’s the shadow self. No matter how you identify, Black Moon Lilith can represent a powerful, untamed feminine energy that may have been suppressed or misunderstood. Lilith can highlight areas where we might experience conflict, frustration, or a sense of being misunderstood.

Asteroid Lilith (#1181):

This is a physical asteroid in the asteroid belt; between Mars and Jupiter. Some astronomers and astrologers believe that the asteroid pieces in this space belonged to a planet that once resided here, given the space between these two planets compared to other planets. This is the only physical object in astrology that represents Lilith.

The themes of asteroid Lilith include rejection, exile, the pain of being misunderstood, and deep feminine wisdom. She brings more of the earthy, myth-based side of Lilith into the chart. While Black Moon Lilith often represents a more primal, untamed, and even rejected side of the shadow self, asteroid Lilith highlights how these themes manifest in everyday life and relationships. This is a physical asteroid that adds nuance to the Lilith archetype. It's a point that can reveal how you express your Lilith energy in your interactions and daily routines.

Dark Moon Lilith (Waldemath Moon):

This is a slightly more controversial point; but so is Lilith right? After countless research I can tell you I’m still perplexed as to what it actually is. Some say it’s a hypothetical second moon hidden behind smoke or behind our moon and that’s why it can’t be proven to exist. Others say it’s the direct shadow of the moon… Either way, this illusive second moon represents a shadowy, ghost-like energy. Not all astrologers use it, but those who do often find it highlights unconscious power, hidden fears, and the mystical unknown.

The purpose of all these Lilith’s in the sky?

Overall, every one of these placements highlight our shadow traits. Personally, I don’t think distinguishing the differences between the energy of each is all that important. Mostly because there isn’t enough research and study to give an exact distinction between each of these. Some astrologers will say one thing and others will suggest something completely different. What we can all agree on is that Lilith represents the shadow self and all these placements highlight parts of your shadows. Learning what these shadows could be in your chart may help you do shadow work and thus convert the challenges they bring into self empowerment gifts.

Finding Your Lilith Placements in Your Chart

What I recommend you do now is look up your birth chart and look for each of these placements. Here’s how:

  1. Go to Astro.com. and locate their Astrological Chart Selection, you may have to type this in the search bar if you have trouble locating it. This will take you to their Extended Chart Selection.

  2. Once you are on this page it will prompt you with either New Visitor or Log In. If you’re new here it will prompt you to create a profile, but don’t worry this is free and will be helpful when you want to revisit your chart. You’ll also be able to save other people’s charts which can come in handy if you’re looking to get more into astrology!

  3. Once you click on New Visitor it will prompt you to fill in your birth information; date, time and location. If you don’t know the time and location try and get as close of an estimate as possible.

  4. After filling in your birth information it will have you create a profile. When you finish this step the next page will offer you options on viewing your chart.

  5. Feel free to leave everything as is, except for the Additional Objects tab. Click on the Common Elements and choose Lilith(mean). In the Manual Entry tab you want to input the following: h13 for True Black Moon, 1181 for Asteroid Lilith, and h58 for Dark Moon. You would type in each with commas to separate them, example: h13, 1181, h58. Once you’re done, click on Show the Chart.

  6. This will show you all your Lilith placements. Mean Black Moon will show up as the well known glyph; a crescent moon with an equal sided cross underneath. True Black Moon will show up as Lil(o). Asteroid will show up as Lilit. Dark Moon Lilith will show up as Walde; coined after the astrologer whom first discovered this point.

  7. Note: This chart will be displayed in Placidus style, if you prefer viewing your chart through whole house astrology go back to the previous page and under Chart Drawing Style change the chart to Hellenistic. Neither is better than the other, use which ever chart resonates best with you.

Tips for Learning from Lilith in Your Natal Chart

Study Your Lilith Placement

Identify the house/sign placement and aspects (angles they make to other planets) of each Lilith point in your natal chart to gain insights into specific areas of your life influenced by Lilith's energy.

Check out my post on understanding your natal chart, where I summarize what areas of life pertain to each house in your chart.

Reflect on Themes

Reflect on recurring themes associated with Lilith, such as primal instincts, rebellion, sexuality, and the shadow self, to understand how they manifest in your life. When you notice these themes come up, in whatever way they do show up for you, simply make a note of it and then go back to it when you have time to do shadow work. This will help you find a way to empower yourself. For example, if you tend to be the black sheep in the family when it comes to religion, but you can never quite convey your views eloquently or find yourself in toxic arguments with people because of it, then it may have to do with not tapping into your Lilith placements. Understanding where Lilith is for you may help you understand why this is a struggle for you. Reflecting on this can help you overpower the struggle you may face; learn how to integrate your shadows instead of struggling against them.

Embrace Authenticity

Embrace the call for authenticity and liberation represented by Lilith in your chart. Explore areas where you may need to confront societal norms and embrace your true nature. In all of Lilith’s mythology, she was never one to shy away from embracing all aspects of herself and that’s what made her so powerful. She was feared because she could not be controlled or tamed by societal norms.

Seek Integration

Integrate the lessons and insights gained from exploring Lilith in your chart into your journey of self-discovery, empowerment, and personal growth. Embracing your inner Lilith helps you understand that your shadows are not negative but rather a hidden power.

Lilith in Each of The Houses

These examples illustrate how Lilith can manifest in different areas of life, highlighting themes of rebellion, empowerment, and authenticity within the context of the natal chart. It's essential to consider the house placement along with other factors, such as aspects and planetary placements, to gain a comprehensive understanding of how Lilith influences an individual's life path and experiences. This is meant to be a general guide that may help you on your journey; take what resonates and reflect on how you can turn possible challenges in your life into your gifts.

Look for the house and sign that each of your Lilith placements is in and see if any of these brief descriptions resonate with you, just keep in mind that aspects and overall your entire chart also have to be considered and for that you will need a more in-depth reading.

1st House - Aries

With Lilith in the 1st House, there may be a strong emphasis on individuality, self-expression, and authenticity. Individuals with this placement may feel a deep urge to assert their independence and break free from societal norms. To overcome these struggles try having daily affirmations, and diving deeper into your hobbies and passions. Don’t be afraid to be yourself, authenticity is your power.

Overindulgence tends to be a struggle for those who don’t pay attention to their Lilith in this house. Make sure you have a plan. Wether you are trying to own a cute little cottage in the middle of nowhere or want to have a luxurious mansion by the beach, have a vision board of some sort that will help reel you back in when you are about to make impulsive decisions that may not benefit you in the long run.
